furniture refinishing question.blonde 1950’s wood pieces.would love to turn darker chocolate brown.help!

Was once painted ocre & then stained blonde. Should I use water base paint & can I stain over this? The china cabinet belonged to my grandmother and it took me 4 years to collect the rest of the pieces including a table & 6 chairs and a desk. This is a sentimental thing for me…i would love some help to make everything match & finish all with matching drawer pulls. I just love the deep chocolate brown color with a high gloss finish…any help would be greatly appreciated…I will have access to U.S. products as I am located in the great lakes area …usa.
